A Ten-Day Irish Itinerary: From Dublin’s Gateway to Blarney’s Legend (Days 1-2)

Mr. Pease and I recently took an amazing ten night self-drive tour of the Emerald Isle. Our days were filled with Ireland’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. From the moment we landed at the Dublin Airport to our exploration of the majestic Blarney Castle, our journey was magical. If a trip to Ireland is in your future, you don’t want to miss any of these iconic spots!

A HUGE shoutout to Irish Tourism for booking our accommodations, rental car, ferry tickets, and a few special experiences. They made planning our trip as smooth as possible.

Day 1: Dublin to Kilkenny

Arrival at Dublin Airport

Your adventure begins at Dublin Airport, a bustling gateway that welcomes travelers from around the world. With its efficient facilities and helpful staff, Dublin Airport ensures a smooth and streee-free start to your trip. Once you’ve cleared customs and picked up your rental car or transportation, you’re ready to dive into the heart of Ireland.

A Quick Stop at Green Straw Café in Swords

Just a short drive from the airport is Swords, a quaint town with a vibrant local scene. Make sure to visit the Green Straw Café. This cozy café is perfect for grabbing a hearty breakfast or a light lunch. Their menu features fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with options ranging from delicious scones to inventive salads and sandwiches. The Green Straw Café isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a taste of the warm, welcoming spirit that defines Ireland.

Journey to Kilkenny Castle

After refueling at the Green Straw Cafe, it’s time to head to Kilkenny, a city renowned for its medieval charm and rich history. Kilkenny Castle, a stunning 12th-century fortress, is the crown jewel of the city. Perched on the banks of the River Nore, this majestic castle offers a glimpse into Ireland’s storied past.

Stroll through the beautifully restored rooms and marvel at the impressive architecture. The castle grounds are equally captivating, with sprawling gardens and walking paths that invite you to explore. Kilkenny Castle’s history is brought to life through informative exhibits and guided tours, making it a must-see for history buffs and casual travelers alike.

Relaxing at Bailey’s Hotel

After a day of travel and exploring, you’ll want a comfortable place to unwind. Bailey’s Hotel in Kilkenny is a perfect choice. This charming hotel combines modern amenities with classic elegance. Located in the heart of Kilkenny, Bailey’s Hotel offers easy access to the city’s attractions, including the castle.

The hotel’s rooms are tastefully decorated and equipped with all the comforts you need for a relaxing stay. The on-site restaurant serves a range of delicious dishes, perfect for recharging after a day of sightseeing. It was also my first taste of Ireland’s obsession with beet and goat cheese salads, which I absolutely fell in love with. Whether you’re enjoying a cozy dinner or a nightcap in the bar, Bailey’s Hotel ensures a memorable stay with its warm service and inviting atmosphere.

For those of you that like to stock up on drinks and snacks when you begin a long trip, Bailey’s hotel is conveniently located right around the corner from an Aldi grocery store (which was way nicer than any Aldi I’ve been to in the states).
